The Experience
The Helle Berget Micarta Lock-Back Folding Knife brings Helle’s Scandinavian field-knife sensibility into a compact outdoor EDC format built for pocket carry. Its 2.17-inch 12C27 stainless-steel blade is short enough for precise control yet stout enough for carving, feather-stick preparation, food tasks, cordage, packaging, and the smaller cutting jobs that appear throughout an ordinary day outdoors.
A sturdy back lock holds the blade securely open, while the 0.106-inch blade thickness gives this small folding knife a more substantial feel than its dimensions suggest. The slim, gently curved handle echoes Heileberget—the flat mountain overlooking Helle’s home fjord—and provides a comfortable three-finger grip without unnecessary bulk.
Choose from Beige Canvas, Mustard Jute, or Denim Micarta. Each variation preserves the same compact geometry and performance while offering a distinct material texture and visual character.
Scientific Engineering
- 12C27 Stainless-Steel Blade: Fully hardened Swedish stainless steel provides dependable edge performance, corrosion resistance, and straightforward maintenance.
- Compact Drop-Point Profile: The 2.17-inch blade favors control during carving, food preparation, package opening, feather-stick work, and other deliberate cutting tasks.
- Scandi-Ground Edge: The broad primary bevel supports controlled woodwork and provides a clear reference angle for sharpening on a flat stone.
- Sturdy Back Lock: The locking mechanism secures the blade in its open position and gives the compact folder a reassuringly solid working feel.
- Nail-Nick Opening: A traditional nail nick allows deliberate two-handed opening without adding a protruding thumb stud.
- Removable Micarta Scales: Screw-mounted handle scales can be detached when deeper cleaning is needed.
- Moisture-Resistant Handle Material: Micarta provides a durable, stable grip that requires less environmental care than unfinished natural wood.
- Three-Finger Geometry: The 3.15-inch handle keeps the knife highly portable while providing secure purchase for controlled everyday tasks.
Boutique & Conservation Values
- Helle’s First Standard Micarta Model: The Berget introduces removable Micarta scales to Helle’s regular knife collection while preserving the company’s recognizable Scandinavian design language.
- Built for Everyday Use: Compact proportions make it practical for routine pocket carry without reducing it to a lightweight novelty.
- Serviceable Construction: Removable scales provide access for cleaning and support longer-term care.
- Three Distinct Material Expressions: Canvas, jute, and denim-based Micarta offer meaningful visual and tactile variation without changing the proven blade geometry.
- Made for Maintenance: The Scandi-ground 12C27 blade can be repeatedly sharpened and refined rather than replaced when the edge eventually dulls.
Steward’s Insight
The Berget is a compact three-finger folding knife, not a full-sized carving knife disguised as a pocket model. That smaller grip increases portability and precision, but users with larger hands should expect the little finger to remain outside the handle. The sturdy blade and back lock make it unusually capable for its size, though controlled cutting remains more appropriate than prying, twisting, or striking.
For sharpening, place the broad Scandi bevel flat against a stone and work evenly until a light burr develops along the opposite side. Repeat the process from the other face, then finish with a leather strop to remove the burr and refine the edge.
Micarta requires relatively little maintenance, but grime can accumulate around the scale edges and pivot. Routine cleaning can be handled with a damp cloth and careful drying. For deeper maintenance, the screw-mounted scales may be removed, provided the hardware is kept organized and reinstalled without overtightening.
This knife is ideal for: users seeking a sturdy three-finger outdoor EDC knife for pocket carry, carving, feather-stick preparation, camp meals, packages, cordage, and daily property tasks.
