Choose the 14C28N variant when fire-steel compatibility and consistent hardness across the entire blade are more useful. Helle confirms that its 14C28N knives are sufficiently hard to work with a fire steel, provided the spine geometry offers an appropriate striking edge.

Both versions should be sharpened by laying the broad Scandi bevel flat against a stone and working evenly until a light burr develops. Repeat from the opposite side, then finish with a leather strop to remove the remaining burr and refine the edge. Avoid heavy prying or careless batoning; Helle specifically cautions against batoning stick-tang knives because errors can damage the edge, handle, or blade.
