The Experience

The Helle Hellefisk Floating Fishing Knife is an exceptionally lightweight fixed blade designed for anglers, paddlers, cold-weather trips, and outdoor food preparation. Its slim 4.84-inch 12C27 stainless-steel blade provides the reach and controlled flexibility needed for cleaning fish and making precise slicing cuts without turning the knife into an oversized fillet tool.

The barrel-shaped cork handle is warm in bare hands, naturally comfortable in cold conditions, and buoyant enough to keep the knife afloat if it is accidentally dropped in the water. At only 3.67 ounces with its sheath, the Hellefisk adds little weight to a tackle box, canoe pack, or outdoor kitchen kit while remaining capable of broader camp utility.

Designed by Tor Indergaard in 1992, the Hellefisk remains one of Helle’s most distinctive fishing knives because its low weight, cork construction, and practical blade geometry solve real problems on and around the water.

Scientific Engineering

  • 12C27 Stainless-Steel Blade: Fine-grained stainless steel provides dependable corrosion resistance, edge stability, and straightforward sharpening for fishing and outdoor food-preparation tasks.
  • Slim Fishing-Blade Geometry: The narrow 4.84-inch blade supports controlled slicing, fish cleaning, and detailed preparation while retaining enough substance for general camp use.
  • Light Blade Flex: The 1.3 mm blade offers some flexibility for following natural contours without behaving like an extremely thin commercial fillet knife.
  • Stick-Tang Construction: The tang extends securely into the handle while helping preserve the knife’s unusually low overall weight.
  • Floating Cork Handle: Naturally buoyant cork helps keep the knife on the surface if dropped into the water.
  • Cold-Weather Comfort: Cork transfers less cold to the hand than metal or dense synthetic materials, making the handle more comfortable during chilly fishing trips.
  • Barrel-Shaped Grip: The rounded handle fills the palm naturally and provides a simple, adaptable grip without unnecessary contouring.
  • Genuine Leather Sheath: The included leather belt sheath protects the blade and provides traditional, convenient field carry.

Boutique & Conservation Values

  • Purpose-Built for Life Around Water: The buoyant handle and corrosion-resistant blade make the Hellefisk particularly well suited to fishing, paddling, and waterside camp use.
  • Exceptionally Lightweight Carry: Its cork handle and slim construction reduce unnecessary pack weight without compromising practical cutting ability.
  • Naturally Renewable Handle Material: Cork is harvested without cutting down the tree, making it a distinctive natural material with practical environmental advantages.
  • Versatile Beyond Fishing: The blade also works well for outdoor cooking, slicing food, cutting cordage, and other controlled camp tasks.
  • Norwegian Craftsmanship: Made in Norway with a design that has remained relevant since its introduction in 1992.

Steward’s Insight

Although the Hellefisk floats, the leather sheath does not necessarily share the same buoyancy, so secure the knife whenever working from a boat, dock, or shoreline. After exposure to fresh or salt water, rinse and dry the blade thoroughly before returning it to the sheath. Allow the leather to dry naturally rather than placing it near direct heat.

The slim blade is designed for controlled slicing rather than twisting through joints, prying, or striking hard materials. Used within that role, it offers a useful middle ground between a general outdoor knife and a highly flexible dedicated fillet blade.

This knife is ideal for: medium to large hands | anglers and paddlers | cold-weather fishing | fish cleaning and outdoor cooking | lightweight camp carry
