Choose the substantial 14C28N Scandi-ground version for woodcraft, kindling preparation, carving, and more demanding outdoor work. Select the lighter 12C27 flat-ground Nordlys FG when clean slicing, food preparation, reduced pack weight, and precise cuts matter most.

Named after the Norwegian word for the Northern Lights, the Nordlys was designed as a smaller, lighter sibling to Helle’s larger Nord while retaining its versatile handle geometry and practical outdoor blade shape.

A knife’s tang is the portion of blade steel that extends into its handle. In a full-tang knife, that steel continues through the handle’s full length, creating a strong foundation for demanding work. Both Nordlys variants use full-tang construction, so the practical decision comes down primarily to the blade grind.

A Scandi grind forms a broad, visible bevel near the edge. It offers excellent control against wood and is relatively straightforward to sharpen by laying that bevel flat against a stone. A flat grind tapers gradually from the blade’s spine toward the edge, reducing drag and creating a thinner slicing geometry.
