The Experience
The Helle Utvær Bushcraft Knife is a compact, full-tang field knife built for controlled carving, camp work, and traditional Scandinavian bushcraft. Its 4.13-inch blade keeps the knife maneuverable, while the substantial 3 mm steel and full-tang construction provide the strength needed for more demanding outdoor tasks.
Designed with Danish knifemaker Jesper Voxnaes, the Utvær combines modern field geometry with Helle’s hand-finished curly birch. The result is a capable working knife that feels purposeful without becoming oversized or unnecessarily heavy.
Scientific Engineering
- Full-Tang Construction: The blade steel extends through the full length of the handle, creating a strong structural foundation for demanding field use.
- Scandinavian Grind: A broad Scandi bevel provides controlled contact with wood and creates an edge that can be maintained by laying the bevel flat against a sharpening stone.
- 12C27 Stainless Steel: The non-laminated blade is hardened consistently throughout, providing durability, corrosion resistance, and predictable sharpening performance.
- Modern Bushcraft Profile: The compact 4.13-inch blade balances carving control, general camp utility, and manageable carry.
- Reinforced Curly Birch Handle: Two solid rivets secure the hand-sanded handle scales to the full tang, while vulcanized-fiber spacers add durability and visual contrast.
- Extended Pommel: Exposed steel at the rear of the handle can strike a ferro rod and assist with light utility tasks such as cracking nuts.
- Medium-Sized Grip: The 4.13-inch handle is particularly well suited to small and medium-sized hands.
- Leather Belt Sheath: A fitted genuine-leather sheath provides traditional carry, with a left-handed sheath available by special request.
Boutique & Conservation Values
- Purposeful Collaboration: Jesper Voxnaes brings a modern field-tool perspective to Helle’s traditional Norwegian craftsmanship.
- Natural Individuality: Curly birch varies naturally in grain, tone, and figure, giving each handle its own character.
- Built for Long-Term Ownership: Durable steel, replaceable sharpening performance, and mechanically secured handle scales support years of responsible use.
- Strength Without Excess: The Utvær delivers full-tang durability in a compact format that remains comfortable to carry and control.
- Made in Norway: Crafted by Helle in Holmedal using the natural materials and practical design principles that define the brand.
Steward’s Insight
The Utvær’s Scandi grind is especially useful for controlled carving because the broad bevel naturally registers against the wood. When sharpening, place that entire bevel flat against the stone rather than trying to create a separate secondary edge.
The exposed pommel can be used with a ferro rod, but it should be treated as a light-duty striking and utility surface—not as a substitute for a hammer. This preserves both the knife and the natural curly birch handle during long-term use.
This knife is ideal for: Small to Medium Hands | Controlled Carving | Feather Sticks | General Camp Tasks | Ferro Rod Use
