The Experience
The Morakniv Hook Knife 164 (S) is a specialized spoon- and bowl-carving knife designed for deeper hollows and tighter concave forms. Its compact 2.17-inch blade uses a pronounced 26 mm curve that reaches into scoops, cups, bowls, and other shapes that are difficult to carve with a straight blade.
Unlike the double-edged Hook Knife 163, the 164 has one sharpened edge and one unsharpened back. This allows the supporting hand to guide the blade from behind during controlled carving. Choose the Right-Handed or Left-Handed version according to your dominant carving hand.
The barrel-shaped Scandinavian birch handle is treated with linseed oil for a comfortable natural grip, while the included Swedish vegetable-tanned leather cover protects the curved edge between carving sessions.
Scientific Engineering
- Tight 26 mm Curvature: The compact hook profile is designed for scoops, deep spoon bowls, cups, and tighter concave surfaces.
- Single-Edge Construction: One side is sharpened while the back remains unsharpened, allowing careful finger-supported carving techniques.
- Hand-Specific Geometry: The blade grind is reversed between the right- and left-handed models so each version cuts naturally in its intended hand.
- 12C27 Swedish Stainless Steel: Alleima stainless steel provides corrosion resistance, dependable edge retention, and straightforward maintenance.
- Thin 2 mm Blade: The narrow blade stock reduces resistance during precise hollowing and curved cuts.
- Full Rat-Tail Tang: The blade extends securely into the handle for stability during repeated carving motions.
- Barrel-Shaped Birch Handle: The rounded grip supports several hand positions and remains comfortable during detailed carving sessions.
- Leather Edge Protection: The fitted cover shields the curved cutting edge during storage and transport.
Boutique & Conservation Values
- Made for Traditional Craft: The Hook Knife 164 is purpose-built for spoon carving and green woodworking rather than adapted from a general outdoor knife.
- Choice of Handedness: Dedicated right- and left-handed versions provide more natural control than a one-size-fits-all carving tool.
- Natural Swedish Materials: Scandinavian birch and Swedish vegetable-tanned leather give the knife an authentic workshop character.
- More Than 80% Recycled Steel: The 12C27 blade incorporates a high percentage of recycled material.
- Made in Mora: Each knife is assembled and heat-treated in Mora, Sweden, within Morakniv’s longstanding carving tradition.
Steward’s Insight
The Hook Knife 164 is intended for deeper, tighter hollows than the wider Hook Knife 163. It is especially useful after the basic spoon or bowl shape has been established and the interior needs to be deepened, refined, or smoothed.
The handedness refers to the hand holding the knife:
- Choose Right-Handed when the knife will primarily be controlled with the right hand.
- Choose Left-Handed when it will primarily be controlled with the left hand.
Because the back of the blade is unsharpened, the opposite hand can provide controlled support behind the blade—but fingers should always remain clear of the cutting path.
Maintain the curved edge with a fine round strop, tapered sharpening tool, or abrasive wrapped around a properly sized dowel. Preserve the original curve rather than flattening the inside surface.
This knife is ideal for: spoon and bowl carving | deep hollows and scoops | green woodworking | controlled single-edge carving | right- or left-handed craftspeople
