The Experience
The JCS Wildlife Deluxe Caged Platform Bluebird Feeder is a species-selective open platform mealworm feeder based on the proven Gilbertson cage design — engineered to give Eastern and Western Bluebirds, Carolina Wrens, and other small songbirds unrestricted access to mealworms while physically excluding European Starlings, Northern Mockingbirds, squirrels, and other bully species. Unlike enclosed box-style bluebird feeders, the Sky Diner uses a wire cage structure surrounding an open poly-lumber platform — allowing bluebirds to land, perch, and feed naturally in an open environment while the cage geometry prevents larger birds from entering. Four grooved entry channels cut into all four sides of the base give bluebirds a secure foothold when entering and exiting the feeder, with integrated drain holes at each end preventing water accumulation in the grooves. Two included plastic mealworm cups hold approximately four ounces of mealworms each. The entire platform is constructed from recycled poly-lumber guaranteed never to crack, split, or fade — and at 16 inches long and 11.5 inches wide, the Sky Diner provides a generous feeding surface that accommodates multiple bluebirds simultaneously. Available in Blue or Blue & Gray.
Scientific Engineering
- Gilbertson Cage Design — Proven Species Exclusion: The Sky Diner is based on the cage feeder design pioneered by bluebird steward Steve Gilbertson — a wire cage structure surrounding an open feeding platform that allows small songbirds to pass through freely while physically blocking larger bully species. The cage geometry is the structural mechanism for species exclusion — no electronic components, no moving parts, no maintenance required beyond basic cleaning.
- Open Platform Feeding Environment: Unlike fully enclosed bluebird feeders, the caged platform design allows bluebirds to feed in a naturalistic open environment — perching, landing, and moving freely within the cage while remaining protected from competitive exclusion by larger species outside.
- Four-Channel Entry System with Drain Grooves: Four grooves cut into all four outer sides of the base provide secure footholds for bluebirds when entering and exiting the feeder. Integrated drain holes at each end of every groove prevent water accumulation — keeping the entry channels dry and functional in all weather conditions.
- Dual Mealworm Cup Configuration: Two included plastic mealworm cups hold approximately four ounces of mealworms each — providing a combined eight-ounce mealworm capacity that reduces refill frequency and accommodates active feeding populations. Replacement cups are available directly from JCS Wildlife if needed.
- Recycled Poly-Lumber Platform Construction: The feeder platform and roof are constructed from recycled poly-lumber — a high-density material manufactured from at least 95% post-consumer recycled plastic. Structurally resistant to moisture, UV radiation, temperature cycling, and biological decay — guaranteed never to crack, split, or fade under normal weather exposure. No painting, staining, or seasonal treatment required.
- Hanging Mount with 12.5" Clearance: The included hanging system provides 12.5 inches of total clearance — positioning the feeding platform at an accessible height while maintaining adequate ground clearance for the bluebirds' approach and exit flight paths.
- Easy Maintenance: Clean with warm water and mild soap. The poly-lumber platform resists biological buildup and dries quickly — supporting the recommended cleaning interval that prevents the spread of avian illness between feeding visits.
Boutique & Conservation Values
- The Open Air Alternative: The Sky Diner serves the bluebird steward whose birds have shown a preference for open platform feeding over enclosed box feeders — providing species-selective access in a naturalistic open environment that some bluebird populations adopt more readily than fully enclosed designs.
- Multi-Species Compatibility: While engineered primarily for Eastern and Western Bluebirds, the cage geometry also accommodates Carolina Wrens, House Wrens, and other small songbirds — making the Sky Diner a versatile mealworm feeding station for the steward managing a diverse small songbird population.
- Placement Tip: For best results, position near a water feature such as a bird bath. Bluebirds associate food and water sources and will locate a nearby mealworm feeder more readily when a hydration station is visible from the feeding area.
